The Family Business

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Carl Weber is a New York Times and #1 Essence® bestselling novelist. In addition to his writing, Weber is the founder and publisher of Urban Books and in 2005, he was named Blackboard’s Publisher of the Year. He is the owner of the Urban Knowledge chain of book stores and a past recipient of Blackboard’s Bookseller of the Year award.

I never would have imagined this series would have turned out the way it has. Carl Weber is such a talented writer, it’s hard to keep up! I started this series back in 2012! 😳 I believe that shows why I rated the series 5 stars. Every book is a page turner, and we are 8 books in, and I hope it doesn’t end anytime soon.

LC Duncan is the owner of Duncan Motors, the largest African American owned dealership chain. I found that fact alone to be quite interesting, you don’t hear of too many families owning a dealership. LC had very humble beginnings, and the only one of his brothers to graduate from college. LC was smart, motivated, and driven. Without providing too much information, it’s a lot going on in this dealership! Things you couldn’t even imagine, because as stated LC runs one of the most respected car dealerships.

Prior to moving to New York city, LC was beyond smitten by a young lady named Chippy. I always say nothing worth having comes easy, and Chippy did not. Chippy didn’t attend the same college LC did, or any college at all. She was very different from the person he started out with, a nice young lady named Donna. LC preferred his women a little more grounded like himself, and Donna was a little too uppity to keep his interest. After all sorts of drama LC and Chippy ended up together, and oddly enough Donna never leaves the picture. The couple has 5 kids; Junior, Orlando, Paris, London, and Rio. As you can see the names are a bit extreme, and trust their lifestyle matches exactly who they are.

I highly recommend getting started with this series. You can purchase his books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Happy reading! 📚

Mafiaso Part 1 – Book Review

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You have to check out this new series by Nisa Santiago! I’ll start off this review with saying, good girls do not always finish last. Always, do what is right even when people can’t see you, or if you feel like it isn’t the easiest decision.I am a big fan of Nisa Santiago’s books and I’ve just added another series to my favorites list! You can catch her bio in my previous review, under Fancies Book Reviews. Ok, let’s get to it.

Our heroine of the book, Maxine, life starts out pretty great. Maxine comes from a two parent home, nice neighborhood, attended the best schools and achieved great grades, even aspired to be a Lawyer… until! Until, Mr. Scottie came into her world. Scottie was a different breed, and that excited Maxine. He grew up on the opposite side of town, with an upbringing far from suitable. Scottie is well respected in his neighborhood, and an upcoming street pharmacist. Everything possible screamed for Maxine not to talk to this guy, but he spoiled her with nice  things and apparently it blinded her. Often times we attract opposites, and always look for love and friendships in all the wrong places. Maxine’s, other downfall in life was her best friend, Layla. If you’ve never listened to your parents before, respect their concerns when it comes to your relationships.

Without giving too much away Maxine’s wonderful world is turned upside down, by Layla and Scottie. The good girl Maxine, turns Maxie and learns a lot of life lessons. Other important characters to Maxine’s life are; Meyer and Bugsy, Lucky Luciana West, Bonnie and  Clyde, and Gotti. All of those names symbolize legendary mobsters. Their significance to the overall story line is huge, and very entertaining. I love the picture Nisa paints, and watching it unfold.. I was hooked!

Make sure to check out this new series by Nisa Santiago, you will not be disappointed! You can grab a copy via Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Happy Reading.  📚

*As previously once the series is complete i’ll provide a recap of the entire series.

The Prada Plan 5 – Review

Rating : ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Series Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

You can check out Ashley Antionette’s bio from my previous reviews. I’ll give you a little bit of back information on the series, and why I just fell in love back in 2013. Yes, I have stalked this series for 4 years! 😂

The main character Disaya Morga, aka Yaya, has about nine lives throughout this series, reason behind me giving the last book only three stars. The first book starts out explaining the “Prada Plan.” Which was passed down from her mom. It was a way to introduce a lady to any sort of hustle, to always stay on top. Yaya, became very good at her hustle and developed some unbeknownst enemies on the way. She also meets the love of her life Indie, A relationship with a very dynamic storyline. Her upbringing isn’t the best, and she learns a lot of hurtful information on the the one’s that supposedly care for her. I wouldn’t say that Yaya is the strongest individual mentality, so that makes a lot of her problems more worse than they should be.

Ok, let’s move in to Book Two, Leah’s Story. We find out Yaya has a sister she never knew existed named Leah. Leah was fully aware of Yaya’s existence, and grew up resenting her. Thinking Yaya lived the glorious lifestyle with both parents. On the outside looking in, that was a way to perceive things. However, as stated before Yaya had many problems. Now! Let’s add Leah to the list of enemies.

Book Three, The Green – Eyed Monster was pretty explosive! Mind you I am only mentioning main characters, but there are so many captivating characters that make this story so exciting! Leah, literally tries to take over Yaya’s life. Along the lines of the movie, “Single White Female.” And I am sure your remembered how that ended.  I’ve said many times mental illness is real. This story is total fiction, but I am sure you have seen stories like this on the news.

Book Four, Love and War. This book focuses more on Yaya and Indies relationship. Of course we have to have a relationship crisis in any good series, and we have one here! Indie’s past comes to light, and a love he once forgotten has his child. Yaya has no plans to bow down and release her man, at the end the best woman wins!

We are now to Book Five – After all you have read I grew quite tired of Yaya. She could never make a decision that was right for her, and her daughter. Her decisions were always based upon someone else, or utterly selfish! With her having shambled beginnings, I would have expected more from Yaya. I would have expected her to be more of a fighter, bolder! Needless to say I was disappointed.

I highly recommend checking out the series for yourself. You can grab copies of the The Prada Plan on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Happy Reading! 📚

Luxe Two: A Lala Land Addiction Book Review

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ashley Antionette has done it again in this dynamic duo Luxe! Make sure to check out my review and biography on Ashley Antionette on the first part of  of this duo.

The book picks right up with the excitement following the story of Bleu Montclair. We were left on a pretty intense cliffhanger, and I can say I was really rooting for Bleu.

I will mention this without providing too much, but I didn’t think Bleu was going to make it out alive. This girl has more favor on her life than most, and the majority of the book she worked my nerves. Ashley does a great job portraying the withering lifestyle of an addict. I was able to visualize the scenes as I was reading them, this is just how good this story is! Sienna (Bleu’s Mom) made the ultimate sacrifice, and even though the outcome was unfavorable she showed courage, and selflessness. Love was something Sienna never provided to Bleu her entire life, and that caused her to travel down a path of destruction. Love your children parents, it means so much in their development in life.

Overall Noah and Bleu had a great story! I think Noah portrays the characteristic of a great man… Ladies, get you a Noah. 😊

I am still a little shocked with the ending, and I am hoping for a Luxe 3. The world needs to know the outcome of Cinco and Naomi. 👎🏾 Karma always has a way of rearing it’s ugly head.

I hope you all enjoy Luxe 2 as much as I did. Grab your copy today from Amazon or Barnes and Noble.  Happy Reading 📚

The House That Hustle Built 3

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I buzzed through this book! To say it was a page turner is an understatement. Nisa did a great job with building the suspense in the beginning of the book. I was so anxious to find out what would happen with Pearla, and Cash I was beside myself.

I provided information on the two main characters in my review on Parts 1 and 2.  A few more characters come into play. Towards the end of The House the Hustle Built Part 1 Pearla and Cash went there separate ways. The drama became too much for the couple to handle. It appeared to be a misunderstanding, but the two weren’t good for each other. It becomes very evident in this book. However, Cash ended up settled with a young lady by the name of Sophie, and Pearla started a relationship with Hassan. Now Sophie, and Hassan are bad news. Adding to the list of bad news would be; Kwan – Sophie’s brother, April -Pearla’s best friend, and Bimmy – Hassan’s right hand man, and April’s boyfriend .

Cash found himself public enemy number 1! He has everyone trying to kill him, and he really has no real street credibility. Through the whole book he was a nervous wreck, I found it quite entertaining… you reap what you sow.

I definitely loved the ending, and I think Pearla and Hassan are perfect for each other. I am almost certain it will be another version of this story. I can not see Hassan ending things as is. Oh I can not wait!!!

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Happy Reading! 📚

Nisa Santiago came bursting onto the literary scene in 2009 with her debut title, Cartier Cartel. She followed up with the sequel, Return of the Cartier Cartel – which turned into a national bestseller. The Library Journal declared that Santiago’s sequel, [Return of the Cartier Cartel] “Will keep readers hooked to the last chapter.” The author emphatically states that her decision to start a new series instead of penning part 3 to Cartier Cartel was a brave one. “My readers love Cartier and they wanted more.” Santiago wants her readers to know that she has so many stories to tell and shows no signs of slowing down.

She is hands down one of my favorite authors. I have read every book she has published, and I have referred her to many of my friends and family. I would encourage you to get lost in Nisa’s world, you will not regret it. Not only is she a talented writer, she has a great soul. I have written her on numerous occasions, and she responds to her fans. She takes the time out to connect with her fans, and it is a great example of the humanity she portrays.

My Rating-

Overall both books of this trilogy are great!

Pearla, one of the main characters in this book, is a natural born hustler.  Hustling since the age of 13, she put together a crew  of ladies who made a name for themselves  boosting high priced clothing items.  Pearla does not have the best relationship with her mom, which causes her to stay in the streets. Pearl made two major mistakes in the story. Becoming too big in the head and burning bridges, and empowering a man who was not  worth it.

Cash, the other main character, started out as a local  “hood” car jacker. He started stealing cars at the age of 12, its something he loved and enjoyed doing. Cash loved the life he lived he loved the streets, the hustle, and his crew. He grew up in poverty, so stealing cars was a step up in life in his eyes.  His relationship with his parents was quite dysfunctional as well. Father, a known crackhead in the neighborhood, and his Mom, is constantly being thrown in jail for prostituting herself.

The two (Pearla and Cash) find themselves together. From the outside looking in they are the perfect couple, dynamic duo. However, they were both dealing with major issues and not mature enough to appreciate one another. Pearla fully investing in her man, seen his potential and empowered him to grow his trade. Pearla made the mistake of many women, being the power house she is, wanted her man to be on the same level. Cash never wanted to be anything more than a local hustler. The relationship had many great moments, and even more explosive!

I love the story, for the bigger picture. The story deals with things we all battle on a daily basis. Family issues, jealousy from peers, and trying to advance in a world that seems to care nothing about you.

The trilogy is full of many exciting surprises. I recommend you read this book, and pass it on.

A Sinful Calling Book Review

Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

IMG_3843

New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author, Kimberla Lawson Roby has published 23 novels. She is best known for her depiction of real-life social issues written in a fictional format. Kimberly has also won numerous awards for her talent. Her novels deal with very real issues, including corruption in the church, drug addiction, infidelity, gender discrimination, and racism to name a few.

Kimbela gets even more love from me, since we share the same Alma Mater; Cardinal Stritch University.

Roby is best known for her Reverend Curtis Black series , and A Sinful Calling is the latest in this series.

My Review-

The review for this book, does not  reflect how I feel about the overall series. I rated the book a 4 for the following reasons; Dillon’s character was not significant enough for a spinoff, and I am totally over Alicia. She is beyond confused, and it just became annoying. I get it, we are uncovering major issues we are faced with today in the both of them. However, I just feel it was overkill.

Ill elaborate more on the issues outlined in this book. Dillon suffered from major depression, which turned into acholism. Alicia suffered from psychotic depression, which caused her to try and commite suicide. We go through things in our lives, and we are taught to just deal with them. Mental Illness is a real thing, and it affects so many people. We can not be too proud to recognize when we have a problem. Also, as friends we have to support others who may suffer from Mental Illness.

If you or anyone you know, may be battling with Mental Illness please seek help. A great organization to turn to is NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. You can reach them by phone, 800-950 NAMI. Or you can click on the following link nami.org/Find-Support/NAMI-HelpLine. Please help spread the word.

Ashley Antionette is the most successful female writer of her time. The feminine half of the popular married duo, Ashley and JaQuavis, she has co-written over 40 novels. Several of her titles have hit the New York Times best-sellers list, she is most widely regarded for her racy four-book saga, The Prada Plan… Which is by far one of my favorites! Ashley and her husband are extremely talented, and I definitely recommend checking out their work.

My Review-

Bleu, who is the product of two crackhead parents experienced more at a young age, than most in a lifetime. Her parents used to have a great reputation in Flint, Michigan but turned to become dependent of the street pharmacetuicals sold. They lost everything, and argued constantly about getting high. Bleu hated her life, many days she went nights without eating, and everything she had was used, old, and worn.

Bleu witnessed her father being murdered, and it scared her for life. Bleu’s mother resented her and the abuse became worse, because she reminded her of her father. Seventeen years of this treatment, but Bleu stayed dedicated to school, and working to make something of herself. Senior year she gets a partial scholarship to UCLA. Bleu takes it, and decides to work and attend classes.. anything to remove her from her current situation. Bleu vowed to never make the same mistakes as her parents….

Bleu attends UCLA and encounters so many situations  that we all do, as college students. It is very interesting to read the turn of events, and how she handles certain situations. One of the reasons I am a fan of this book, is the same reason as others. Ashley makes her characters the envy of everyone. These young ladies may be committing high prices crimes, or battling with major psychological issues. However, they are not your typical “thugs,” the ladies role with class. People aspire to be these types, and it shows you the grass is not always greener on the other side.

This was definitely a great read, and I am anxious to read part 2.
